Branch Services Library Associate

If you love interacting with people of all ages, we have a great opportunity for you! We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with excellent communication and customer service skills to join our versatile, cross-trained team at our Rakow Branch facility.  The mix of responsibilities of this position includes an emphasis on planning and presenting creative children and family programs, providing basic readers’ advisory and reference assistance to children, teens and adults, and assisting customers with computer applications, eReaders and other mobile devices. The successful individual in this position will be an energetic team player who makes customers feel at home.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience working with children in group settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong public service focus.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer and mobile device applications.
  • Previous library and customer service experience preferred.  
  • Adapts well to changes in routines and workflows.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills a plus.

25 hours per week; schedule includes day, evening and weekend hours

Hourly Rate:  $17.28 per hour. Position includes enrollment in IMRF and prorated time-off benefits.

Security Guard

Gail Borden Public Library has an immediate opening for a part-time Security Guard.  The individual in this position will patrol the interior and exterior of the Main Library, as well as the branch locations. The person in this position must exercise sound judgment in interpreting library safety and security policies with the ability to take decisive action when needed. This position requires the ability to make continuous rounds of all public and staff areas, including parking areas.


The mix of duties for this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assists staff in maintaining appropriate customer behavior
  • Enforces correction of minor policy infractions
  • Writes Incident Reports for unusual or disruptive incidents
  • Assists in monitoring theft detection
  • Performs a total security check of Library facilities after closing
  • Assists with maintenance functions as needed



  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Ability to continuously walk throughout the Library’s indoor and outdoor areas and work independently
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Prior police, fire or military experience strongly preferred
  • Spanish language skills are a plus


18 hours per week; schedule includes afternoon, evening and weekend hours


Hourly Rate:   $15.77 per hour
