A Guide to Gangs and Violence

Parents, educators and concerned members of the community can benefit from becoming familiar with facts about gangs such as common identifiers, behavioral signs and issues in order to recognize and prevent gang involvement. Elgin Police Sargeant Jim Lullo will share his knowledge and insights. No registration.

Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate Screening and Discussion

A two-part screening of the PBS film in which acclaimed writer, producer and director Helen Whitney provides an intimate look into spontaneous outpourings of forgiveness resulting from compelling events from all over the world. Funding for this film is provided by the Fetzer Institute and the John Templeton Foundation. Please register.

Planting a Forgiveness and Compassion Garden

Saturday, October 6, 2012    2 – 4 pm

Forgiveness takes time but comes with the expectation that there will be spring. You are invited to plant an intention to forgive the violence, sorrow and suffering surrounding gangs in gardens throughout Elgin with pastors and other community leaders participating. Open Hearts, Open Minds: Exploring Gang Involvement and Its Impact

A panel of experts will share their first-hand encounters with gangs and violence and discuss the causes of gang involvement and its impact on our community. In partnership with the Elgin Drug and Gang Task Force, Renz Center, the Elgin Police Department, Elgin School Dist. U-46 and the Elgin Boys and Girls Club. No registration.

Xpresión Youth Art

Saturday, October 13, 2012   1 – 3 pm

Youth are invited to join Chicago artist Nino Rodríguez in spray painting a large piece of graffiti art with an Aztec theme.  Please register.

Planting a Garden of Peace and Hope

You are invited to plant seeds of peace and hope with the youth from the Boys and Girls Club. The planting will take place at 3pm and there will be a dedication of the new garden at 4pm. No registration.
