Do you like having fun and engaging with children? Our KidSpace Department at the Main Library has a great summer opportunity for you! We have a temporary position available starting late May through August.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual, who loves working with children and will provide support in our fast-paced, energy-driven, kid-friendly department. The mix of duties includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assisting with activities at the Youth Center Help Desk.
  • Assisting at children’s programs with tasks such as modeling story-time behaviors, monitoring the crowd, and other tasks.
  • Assisting children and caregivers with Youth Center computers and other technologies.
  • Supporting the department with many behind-the-scenes tasks.
  • Retrieving materials as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age requirement - 16 years of age.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communication skills and be comfortable working with the public.
  • Must have skills using basic computer applications including internet searches and word processing programs.
  • Desire and ability to work with children.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills desirable.
  • Flexibility and availability to work a varied schedule which may include days, evenings, and weekend hours.     

Temporary Position - 18 hours per week

Pay Rate:   $ 15.00 per hour

Summer Library Associate

Do you like having fun and engaging with children as they explore the world around them? Our KidSpace Department at the Main Library has a great summer opportunity for you!  We have a 12-week position which will be available starting late May through mid-August to assist our young customers and their caregivers.

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic individual with excellent interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate must be able to juggle tasks in a fast-paced environment and enjoy working with children.  The mix of duties includes providing basic readers’ advisory and reference assistance to children and their parents/caregivers, assisting our young customers with computer applications, assisting with programs for children, and encouraging Summer Reading Challenge participation.   

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience working with children in group settings.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Previous library experience desirable.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills desirable.
  • Flexibility and availability to work a varied schedule which may include days, evenings, and weekend hours.

Temporary Position - 18 hours per week; schedule includes day, evening and weekend hours.

Pay rate:  $21.00 per hour

Summer Book Bike Assistant

Are you looking for a highly engaging and physically active summer job that lets you spend most of your time outdoors? The Book Bike Assistant is a temporary 12-week position which runs from May to August and promises a lot of fun!  We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is versatile, friendly, and enjoys providing top-notch customer service and who can comfortably ride an oversized bicycle.

The mix of duties will include:

  • Riding the Book Bike to various neighborhood locations, including community parks and farmer’s markets and representing the Library.
  • Assisting Mobile Library Services staff members and/or Book Bike Buddies with tasks.
  • Circulating library materials and creating new library card accounts using a mobile checkout system.
  • Stocking and unloading library materials on/off the Book Bike.
  • Engaging with community members around the Summer Reading Program and other library related events and programs.
  • Assisting on the Bookmobile and other library vehicles from time to time as needed.

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to comfortably and safely ride the Book Bike a minimum of 10 miles.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications.
  • Experience working with children a plus.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills desirable.
  • Completion of Bicycle Safety training will be required.

Temporary Position - 18 hours per week; schedule includes day, evening and weekend hours

Pay Rate:  $18.00 per hour

 Summer Branch Services Assistant

Two temporary part-time positions will be available at our Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch locations from May through August 2024. We are looking for friendly individuals with excellent communication and customer service skills. The individuals in these positions need to be versatile and reliable.

 

In this role you will:

  • Assist children and adults with the summer reading program
  • Assist with children’s and family programs
  • Perform circulation routines, including material handling and shelving
  • Assist customers with computer applications, printing, self-check, DVD dispenser, eReader, and other mobile devices

 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications and mobile devices
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills a plus
  • Experience working with children a plus
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch

 

Part-Time: 18 hours per week at the Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch. Schedule includes weekday, evening, and weekend hours.

Hourly Rate:  $17.00 per hour

Passport Services Assistant

Are you looking for an exciting part-time job in a vibrant community? We are currently looking for a Passport Services Assistant who can read and write in both English and Spanish to work at the Main Library location. This detail-oriented job includes responding to questions about the passport application process, reviewing passport paperwork, taking passport photos, and following library and U.S. Department of State procedures. The ideal candidate has excellent customer service skills and truly enjoys helping others.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish. Must be able to successfully complete language skills test at the proficient level.
  • Previous experience in a customer service environment.
  • Ability to complete annual passport acceptance certification and ongoing training.
  • Must be tactful and respect the confidentiality of library customers and staff.

Additional requirements specified by the U.S. Department of State to perform as a Passport Acceptance Agent:  

  • U.S. citizen or a U.S. non-citizen national.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Does not have a record of either: (i) A Federal or State felony conviction; or (ii) A misdemeanor conviction for crimes involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, including but not limited to embezzlement, identity theft, misappropriation, document fraud, drug offenses, or dishonesty in carrying out a responsibility involving public trust.

12 hours per week; schedule will include days, evenings, and weekend hours.

Pay Rate: $18.00 per hour
