Customer Relations Clerk

Gail Borden Public Library has 2 part-time positions available in our fast-paced Customer Relations Department at our Main Library facility.  The individual for this position must be very customer-focused and have excellent communication and customer service skills, the ability to problem-solve and analyze customer needs, and also enjoy providing top-notch service to library customers.

Primary job duties include:

  • Performing library material check-in and check-outs, renewals, holds, customer library card registrations and license plate renewals in accordance with established library policies and procedures
  • Providing information to customers, answering questions, and being proactive with offering assistance in a friendly and professional manner
  • Using technology and digital resources to assist patrons with electronic platforms

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A real “people Person”, enthusiastic, caring, friendly, and empathetic
  • A team player who thinks quickly on their feet as decisions need to be made
  • A self-starter with the initiative and courage to propose new ideas



  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Some knowledge of library clerical procedures and practices
  • Experience in a customer service environment
  • Basic math skills and ability to alphabetize
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred


18 hours per week – combination of days, nights and weekend hours


Hourly Rate:  $13.16 per hour

Pandemic Health Navigator 

The COVID-19 Pandemic Health Navigator Program (PHNP) is an integral part of the State’s response to COVID-19 that integrates community health centers, community-based organizations, and our public health partners to coordinate resources for our most vulnerable populations impacted by COVID-19.

The Pandemic Health Navigator (PHN) assists individuals in the community, particularly those residing in low-income and marginalized areas, with challenges they encounter due to the pandemic including, but not limited to, helping clients complete the proper steps to obtain a COVID-19 vaccine if needed and identifying issues the client has because of the pandemic such as housing concerns, health issues and employment difficulties, then referring clients to the appropriate resources to help them with these issues.


  • Provide resource information by utilizing local database systems and the Illinois Public Health Association (IPHA) Resource List.
  • Collect and enter data to document client encounters accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in all required meetings and trainings related to the PHN program.
  • Participate in outreach events in the community to promote awareness.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to think critically and make decisions based on information provided.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently with limited oversight.
  • Possess strong technical skills and knowledge to operate a computer, web-based applications and searches; operate a smartphone and apps; complete online and virtual training modules independently; and document client contacts via online software system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via email, phone, text, video conference and/or in person.
  • Bilingual speakers preferred.
  • Transportation and auto insurance.
  • Experience with community work such as advocacy and volunteering preferred.


Physical Requirements:  Ability to lift and carry of 20 pounds, if necessary.

Positions Available: Temporary full-time and part-time positions available starting immediately and projected to end by October 31, 2021.

Pay: $20 per hour
