Computer Center Clerk

The Gail Borden Public Main Library has a part-time position available at the public Computer Center Desk in the Digital Services Department.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with a team to provide excellent customer service
  • Assisting customers with logging into computers, accessing websites, and formatting documents
  • Assisting customers with printing, scanning, copying, and faxing
  • Preparing devices and the Computer Training Room for classes
  • Maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for library users
  • Data entry
  • Promoting library programs and services

Other Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent 
  • Good clerical and communication skills
  • Two years of hands-on experience using desktop/laptop computers, mobile devices, software, and apps
  • Must be a “people” person and have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Spanish language skills are a plus

Part-Time: 18 hours per week; schedule subject to change and may include day, evening, and weekend hours. The current schedule is Monday 3-9, Tuesday 3-9, Friday 9-12, and Saturday 9-12.

Hourly Rate: $15.00

Bilingual Passport Clerk

Are you looking for an exciting part-time job in a vibrant community? We are currently looking for a Passport Clerk who is fluent in both English and Spanish to work in our Information Services Department at the Main Library downtown Elgin. This detail-oriented job includes reviewing paperwork for accuracy and legibility, taking pictures, and following library and U.S. Department of State procedures. The ideal candidate has excellent customer service skills and truly enjoys helping others.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a customer service environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Ability to complete annual passport acceptance certification and ongoing training.
  • Must be tactful and respect confidentiality of library customers and staff.

Additional requirements specified by the U.S. Department of State to perform as a Passport Acceptance Agent:  

  • U.S. citizen or a U.S. non-citizen national.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Does not have a record of either: (i) A Federal or State felony conviction; or (ii) A misdemeanor conviction for crimes involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, including but not limited to embezzlement, identity theft, misappropriation, document fraud, drug offenses, or dishonesty in carrying out a responsibility involving public trust.

Classification: Part-time; 18 hours per week; schedule includes days, evenings, and weekend hours including every other Saturday.

Hourly Rate: $15.00/hour

Branch Clerk

If you enjoy providing top-notch customer service and want to join our talented and resourceful library team, we have an exciting opportunity for you! We are looking for a customer-focused, creative, and enthusiastic individual with excellent interpersonal skills who can master a variety of tasks in a busy environment. The mix of duties includes assisting customers with computer applications, printing, self-check, DVD dispenser, eReader and other mobile devices, as well as, assisting with library programs, library card registration, readers’ advisory, material handling, and shelving. The Clerk will work at both the Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills a plus
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch (west of Randall Road)

 

Part-Time: 18 hours per week at the Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch. Schedule includes weekday, evening, and weekend hours. (The library reserves the right to change the schedule as necessitated by the library’s operational demands).

Preliminary schedule is:

Week A:                    

            Mondays: 2-7pm at South Elgin Branch
            Wednesdays: 10am-2pm at South Elgin Branch
            Thursdays: 10am-1pm at South Elgin Branch
            Saturdays: 10am-4pm at South Elgin Branch

Week B:

            Sundays: 12-5pm at Rakow Branch
            Mondays: 2-7pm at South Elgin Branch
            Wednesdays: 10am-2pm at South Elgin Branch
            Thursdays: 10am-2pm at South Elgin Branch

 

Hourly Rate:  $14.00 per hour

Reference Librarian

Are you looking for an exciting part-time job in a vibrant community? We are currently looking for 2 part-time librarians to work in our Information Services Department at the Main Library downtown Elgin.

This position provides general reference assistance to information and research requests from our customers, both in-person and virtually. The position also serves as a Passport Acceptance Agent, when necessary, and assists customers with reader’s advisory.  The ideal candidate has excellent customer service skills and truly enjoys helping others.

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with technology such as Microsoft Office, smartphones, tablets, screen casting
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing practices, workflows, and routines
  • Understanding and practice of ALA’s Code of Ethics.
  • Public library experience desirable.
  • Ability to complete annual passport acceptance certification and ongoing training.

Mobile Library Services Assistant 

Are you looking for an exciting part-time job in a vibrant community? Are you interested in providing excellent customer service to both our English and Spanish-speaking customers? Are you a hands-on individual who enjoys working closely with people? If so, then Gail Borden Library has a great opportunity for you in our Mobile Library Services Department.

This position requires working onboard the Bookmobile, TechKnow Mobile and other outreach vehicles with the rest of our Mobile Library Services team to venture beyond the library’s walls and engage our customers where they live, work, play, and relax.  The successful individual needs to be bilingual in English and Spanish, an excellent team player, and well-organized with excellent time management, prioritization capabilities and follow-up skills.

Some of the primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists Mobile Library Services customers with questions and information requests
  • Sorts and shelves library materials aboard our outreach vehicles and at the Library
  • Ensures appropriate materials are shelved for the audience of each day’s route
  • Performs daily check out/check in of materials on board vehicles and at Main Library
  • Assists with daily vehicle checklist and logs
  • Uses the library’s software for check out of materials and library card registrations
  • Works with other Mobile Library Services staff to develop a positive, collaborative, and strong team

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bilingual Spanish/English verbal language skills are required
  • Previous customer service experience a plus
  • Experience working with children a plus
  • Must be dependable and punctual
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications
  • Experience with school bus or large vehicles a plus

 

Part-time:  18 hours per week; schedule includes days, evenings and weekend hours

Hourly Rate: $14.00 per hour
