Local Sustainability

What Does Green Mean? And what does the Gail Borden Public Library have to do with it?

Going Green is much more than just recycling and installing energy efficient light bulbs. It is more than Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  We need to RELATE to each other, so we work together to create a sustainable community. RETHINK the way that we do things.

Libraries are the original recyclers. Besides circulating books, movies, music and more to our community, our library recycles batteries from our PlayAways and paper and plastic in our café, staff lunch room and offices. Our Book Sale Room helps us raise money for projects, but also keeps discarded material from going into landfills. Our community gardens teach sustainable skills and feed hungry families thru local food pantries and soup kitchens. Dynamic programming helps children learn the importance of lowly worms and cute ladybugs. Families learn all about our city’s sustainable plan.

Illinois libraries are actively working to create sustainable communities. The Gail Borden Library is part of a state-wide project, Go Green @ Your Illinois Library. We are here to start conversations about what you’re doing and learning. Visit http://gogreenila.info/
