The phone lines were originally automated with a recording of FAQs, but starting this week, you can speak to a live person after listening to a few menu options. Be ready to press 0 or say “representative” to get to a person more quickly on English-language line.
Before you talk to a live person, you’ll be prompted to enter the “Census ID” that’s printed on the official 2020 Census letter that comes to your home, but you can press # if you don’t have one or know/remember it.
Call centers are taking calls 7 days a week between 7 a.m. and 2 a.m. ET (or in other words, you can’t speak to a live person between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. ET).
