Contests
Edward Gorey House Envelope Art Contest - Participants in this contest are invited to decorate an envelope with art inspired by the work of artist Edward Gorey. This contest runs in the fall and is open to all ages; winners in each age group will receive an Edward Gorey Prize Pack. Here are the 2021 winners. Check back at the Edward Gorey House website each fall for more information.
Letters about Literature - This national contest is sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress along with the Illinois Center for the Book. Students are invited to "read a book of their choice, reflect on it, and write a letter to the author explaining how the book changed their life or view of the world." One Illinois winner at each level of participation will receive a $200 cash award and advance to the national competition; national winners receive $1,000.
Publications
- Amazing Kids! online magazine publishes stories, art, and videos by kids ages 5 to 18. Here are their submission guidelines.
- New Moon Girls publishes writing and artwork by girls ages 8 and up. Here are their submission guidelines. New Moon Girls magazine is available for checkout in the Youth Center.
- Stone Soup magazine is looking for stories, poems, book reviews, and art from kids aged 13 and under.
- Teen Ink publishes writing, art, and photos by students ages 13-19.
