The Robot Zoo Exhibit
October 7 - December 11 Main Library
Visit the giant robot animals to explore how real animals work. The Robot Zoo is one of the most popular exhibits ever to tour science and natural history museums. This free exhibit for families features eight giant robot animals and hands-on activities.
Robot Zoo has amazed people worldwide having previously been at Parc du Futuroscope in France, The Swedish Museum of Natural History in Sweden and The Budapest Science Center. In the United States, the robots have visited the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and a multitude of other first-class museums across the country. Now you can see it here at Gail Borden Public Library!
Nature as Mechanical Engineer
Explore how nature is the premier mechanical engineer. Larger-than-life-size animated robots include a chameleon, a rhinoceros, a giant squid with 18-foot tentacles and a platypus. Also featured are a house fly with a 10-foot wingspread, a grasshopper, a bat and a giraffe whose head and neck alone stretch 9 feet tall.
Cutaways expose the animals’ insides to show recognizable machine parts and gadgets, such as shock absorbers and pumps, that demonstrate what makes animals work. By comparing anatomy to the mechanic counterparts inside the animal robots The Robot Zoo provides incredible new insights and hands-on fun for discovering just how animals work.
Sense of Wonder
The exhibit also includes several sensory activities:
• Test your reaction time (one-twelfth as fast as a house fly’s) by playing Swat the Fly.
• Try Sticky Feet where you find out what it’s like to be a fly on the wall.
• Trigger the Tongue Gun to see how a real chameleon shoots out its long, sticky-tipped tongue to reel in a meal.
• Kick up your feet and hang out with a batty friend in Hang Time.
